State Social Studies Frameworks for Teachers

The newly revised state standards for Social Studies coursework was approved by the State School Board and Oklahoma State Legislature last year. This past school year, a group of social studies educators worked to create the SECOND phase of a Curricular Frameworks to accompany the new standards. The Social Studies Frameworks provides assistance to educators by offering extended explanations of learning targets and suggested instructional resources.
Phase 2 focuses on Inquiry Learning Ideas, Classroom-Ready Formative Assessments, and suggested Unit Progression planning guides. Find the SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM FRAMEWORKS online HERE.
Phase 3 began fall of 2021, adding multiple ready-to-go professional development modules which can assist teachers in using the Curriculum Frameworks, incorporating the latest research in social studies instruction.
Phase 3 of the project also developed sample Formative Assessment Probes to help teachers utilize the Framework's collection of sample assessments by providing sample student responses and rubrics for feedback.

New Frameworks for Personal Financial Literacy!

During the 2022-23 school year a committed group of financial literacy educators from across the state vetted resources, as well as created original resources and formative assessments for the teaching of Oklahoma's Academic Standards for Financial Literacy. The completed document and links to a wide assortment of instructional ideas, as well as classroom-ready lessons, can be accessed at OKLAHOMA CURRICULUM FRAMEWORKS.
In addition, the Oklahoma State Department of Education has developed and launched a NEW online course for students, which can be used as a stand-alone, self-paced course of study or to enhance classroom learning.
Thanks to the Oklahoma Council for Economic Education for their initial work toward lessons used for the online course. Students, parents, and teachers can find more information about the FREE course at PERSONAL FINANCIAL LITERACY FOR STUDENTS ONLINE LEARNING.

Inquiry-Design Model Transforms Learning

Picture
Now available from the National Council for Social Studies, the Inquiry Design Model offers teachers of Social Studies a comprehensive, in-depth guide for building classroom inquiries based on the National Standards C3 Framework. Sample lessons using this model are also available and ready for classroom use! Check out the C3 Teacher website at http://www.c3teachers.org/inquiry-design-model/ for advice on how to formulate compelling and supporting questions, build disciplinary knowledge, and develop the ability of students to evaluate evidence, construct arguments, and take informed action. Downloaded sample lessons that correlate directly to our new state standards can be found on our DIGITAL LOCKER page.
In June, 2019, the Oklahoma State Department of Education hosted a summer academy for Oklahoma teachers, introducing them to the IDM model though a presentation and work day with Professor S.G. Grant. Learn more about this training and the IDM process by viewing Dr. Grant's presentation.
