Teacher of the Year Awards

Attention all Social Studies Teachers of Oklahoma!
OCSS is seeking
nominations for this year's "Outstanding Teacher of the Year"
(Elementary, Middle, and High School) as well as our "Rising Star"
Award. OCSS is proud to recognize exceptional classroom social studies
instruction in grades K-6,5-8, and 9-12. To be nominated, teachers must be
members of OCSS for two years prior to the nomination date. If you are
interested in applying, or would like to nominate a colleague, the following

Recently
Pam Merrill, Edmond Public Schools'
Social Studies Curriculum
Consultant, was recognized as the nation's
"Outstanding Curriculum "Outstanding Curriculum Supervisor"
by the National Social Studies Supervisors Association.
Ms. Merrill
has been teaching in Oklahoma schools for twenty-nine years and has served a part-time and full-time Social Studies consultant for
Edmond over the past fifteen
years. She has taught middle school World Geography , as well
as high school World History, Contemporary Issues, and Advanced Placement Government at
Putnam City North, John Marshall, Santa Fe, and Memorial High Schools. In addition, Ms. Merrill is a member of the Oklahoma
Council for Social Studies, a member of the Oklahoma Council for History Educators, a
contributing author for World Neighbors' educational lessons,
teacher-representative for OASIS, and an education advisor/board member to the Oklahoma Council for
Economic Education. Pam also currently serves as the editor of the OCSS monthly newsletter and the webmaster for our website.
Pam is especially proud of the dedication and
professionalism of Edmond's social studies teachers who work diligently to
offer an exceptional social studies program for their students. One
highlight of their work can be seen in the collection of reading, writing,
and critical thinking instructional strategies, known as the STEPS
HANDBOOK for SOCIAL STUDIES. This "handbook" is now available
online and an be accessed by all OCSS members at:

OKLAHOMA TEACHER
SELECTED AS NCSS
TEACHER OF THE YEAR 2004 |
|
This September, 2004, Ms. Patti Harrold of Edmond
Memorial High School was selected as the National Council for the Social
Studies' Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year. Ms. Harrold will be
honored at this year's annual conference in Baltimore November 19-21st.
Ms. Harrold
teaches AP European History and
Sign Language at Memorial where she also serves as Social
Studies Department Chair. Her prior teaching experiences include Sequoyah
Middle School in Edmond (1981-1986), Klein High School (1979-1981),
Hildebrandt Intermediate School (1978-1979), and Smiley High School
(1975-1978) in Houston, Texas. In addition to her many hours of dedication
to Memorial's Social Studies Department, Ms. Harrold also contributes her
time, effort, and expertise to Edmond's District Social Studies Vertical
Team.
Patti
has much experience in teaching a variety of social studies courses,
including AP US History, Government, Honors World History, World History,
Oklahoma History, 8th grade US History and Civics, 7th grade Geography,
German I, II, III and IV, and choir (both mixed and girls').
Ms.
Harrold was recently recognized as a National Board Certified Teacher and
was honored by the College Board in 1997 as one of its teachers of the year.
This past spring, Patti was named as Oklahoma's High School Social Studies
Teacher of the Year by the Oklahoma Council for the Social Studies.

Bar Association's Teacher and School of Year Award!

The OBA names one Oklahoma
Supreme Court Teacher and School of the Year. This honor along with cash stipends are given to the teacher and school that best demonstrates
teaching citizenship skills.

National American History Teacher of the
Year Awards

Past winners of the Oklahoma State Teacher
Award for United States History include Steve Stephens,
Latta, Oklahoma,
Ms.
Amy Schulke, Fifth Grade
Teacher at Chisholm Elementary,
Edmond Public Schools.
Preserve America and The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American
History honors outstanding teachers of American history across the country with
a new "Preserve America History Teacher of the Year" award. Finalists are selected annually from each State, the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories.
State winners will receive $1,000 and a core archive of history materials
for their school library. A "National Preserve America History Teacher of
the Year" will be selected from the group of State finalists. The winner,
together with the nominating supervisor, will be flown to Washington, DC,
for recognition in a ceremony.

OKLAHOMAN WINS NATIONAL
ELEMENTARY
TEACHER OF THE YEAR!!

Elementary teacher from Arnett Public Schools,
Linda Gunsaulis, was recently awarded the highest
honor given by the National Council for Social Studies, the
"Outstanding Social Studies Elementary Teacher of 2003."
Linda was honored by our state council last year and continued on to the
national level of competition. Her innovations in the classroom, especially in
the area of integrating children's literature, are featured at a special session
during this Winter's OCSS Conference. Come and meet Linda and congratulate her
on this remarkable achievement!
